Johnson and Johnson (JNJ) has launched its Shockwave C2 Aero Fly Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) Catheter in the US. Designed to treat a broad range of calcified coronary artery lesions, the next-generation device delivers treatment pulses at twice the speed of previous-generation coronary IVL catheters.
Building on the improvements introduced with the Shockwave C2 Aero platform, the new catheter uses Shockwave IVL’s differentiated mechanism of action to deliver pulses at double the rate and halve the pause time between pulsing cycles, while maintaining the safety and effectiveness of previous-generation devices.
“Shockwave C2 Aero Fly is built for the future of coronary interventions, where physicians need proven technologies that can help them move faster without compromising safety or confidence in challenging calcified cases,” said Mike Lang, Worldwide President, Circulatory Restoration, MedTech, Johnson and Johnson.
“As the pioneer and leader of the category, Johnson & Johnson is giving physicians and patients an increasingly efficient, predictable platform designed to meet the growing demands of complex coronary care,” Lang added.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death globally, affecting an estimated 315 million people worldwide. With cardiovascular disease prevalence expected to rise and coronary interventions accounting for a substantial proportion of hospital procedures, improving procedural efficiency is becoming increasingly important to help cardiac catheterisation laboratories and physicians manage growing workloads.

New catheter designed to improve cath lab efficiency
According to Johnson and Johnson, the Shockwave C2 Aero Fly Coronary IVL Catheter offers several features designed to help physicians treat complex calcified coronary artery disease more efficiently while improving the patient treatment experience:
- Faster pulsing: Delivers pulses at 2 Hz, reducing treatment time by half to 115 seconds, compared with 230 seconds for previous-generation IVL devices.
- Shorter pause time: Reduces the pause between pulsing cycles to five seconds, a 50% decrease.
- Reduced patient ischemic time: Shorter balloon inflation times minimise temporary procedure-related blood flow blockage and patient ischemic symptoms, such as chest pain.
- Deliverability, crossability and repositioning:Builds on the deliverability, crossability and repositioning capabilities of the Shockwave C2 Aero platform.
“In the cath lab, every second matters, especially as we see more complex cases and higher procedure volumes. By delivering pulses twice as fast and decreasing pause time between cycles, Shockwave C2 Aero Fly enables faster workflows, helping physicians treat calcified coronary disease more efficiently while meeting the growing pace and demand of cath labs,” said Hector Tamez Aguilar, Interventional Cardiologist at Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Shockwave C2 Aero Fly Coronary IVL Catheter is now available in the US. Johnson & Johnson MedTech will showcase the technology at its Circulatory Restoration booth during TCT 2026, scheduled to take place in San Diego, California, from October 31 to November 3, 2026.
