Advanced Radiotherapy: Army Hospital Unveils Linear Accelerator

The advanced technology will enable the delivery of modern radiotherapy techniques, strengthening cancer care services at the Army Hospital (R&R).

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi, has introduced a state-of-the-art Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator aimed at expanding access to advanced radiotherapy and enhancing cancer care services for serving personnel, veterans, and their dependents.

Commissioned on May 25, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the advanced system supports a range of modern radiotherapy techniques, including Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS).

The technology enables precise radiation delivery to tumour sites while minimising exposure to surrounding normal tissues, helping improve treatment outcomes and overall patient care.

The new Linear Accelerator is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s in-house treatment capacity and cater to its growing patient load.

Its induction marks another step in the ongoing modernisation of oncology services within the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). Similar upgrades are also being rolled out across other AFMS oncology centres in a phased manner.

Senior officials present at the launch included DG AFMS Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R) Lieutenant General Avinash Das, along with other dignitaries.
