Spectrum Vascular has acquired Piccolo Medical, strengthening an existing partnership focused on bringing next-generation catheter guidance technology to market.
Headquartered in White Plains, New York, Spectrum Vascular provides vascular access and medication management products engineered to reduce healthcare-acquired infections.
Piccolo Medical, based in San Francisco, specializes in catheter guidance products. Founded in 2016 as a spinout from the Theranova medical device incubator, the company has developed a real-time catheter guidance system that uses blood flow sensing technology to support precise catheter tip placement and eliminate the need for confirmatory chest X-rays.
As part of the acquisition, Piccolo CEO Augustus Shanahan and the existing Piccolo team will join Spectrum to advance development and commercialization of its 510(k)-cleared catheter guidance and location products.
Last month (May), Piccolo achieved a milestone with the first successful patient placements using its next-generation Nav+ Stylet technology, marking progress in guided vascular access procedures.
Commenting on the acquisition, Shanahan said joining Spectrum represents “an exciting new chapter for Piccolo and for vascular access as a whole.”
Spectrum CEO Kenneth Miller said the combination of Piccolo’s navigation technology with Spectrum’s vascular access portfolio and commercial reach will help accelerate innovation, improve patient care, and redefine the standard of care for clinicians worldwide.
The combined organization is expected to set a new standard of care in vascular access with greater speed and reach.
