Jupiter Hospital, Thane has achieved a major milestone in robotic surgery by performing the world’s first robotic kidney transplant surgeries outside China using the CE-certified Toumai robotic surgical system from MicroPort MedBot.
The landmark procedures involved two patients with end-stage kidney disease who underwent successful kidney transplants in consecutive surgeries. Both patients recovered well after surgery.
The surgeries were led by senior transplant surgeon Dr. P. P. Rao, while robotic kidney transplant surgeon Dr. Lokesh Sinha performed the robotic procedures alongside the multidisciplinary transplant team.
The achievement marks another significant step for Jupiter Hospital’s kidney transplant programme, which is now in its 15th year and its robotic kidney transplant, currently in its third year.
Kidney transplantation demands exceptional precision while reconstructing delicate blood vessels and the urinary tract. According to the hospital, the Toumai robotic platform provided high- definition three-dimensional visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision and surgical control, enabling the team to perform the highly complex procedures.
