Retia Medical, Medtronic to Distribute Argos Cardiac Output Monitor in Western Europe

Retia Medical expands partnership with Medtronic to distribute its hemodynamic system, Argos Cardiac Output Monitor, in Western Europe.

US-based cardiovascular intelligence software company Retia Medical has expanded its commercial partnership with Medtronic to distribute the Argos Cardiac Output Monitor across Western Europe.

An FDA-cleared hemodynamic system, Retia Medical’s Argos Cardiac Output Monitor is deployed in leading hospitals across the United States. The agreement will make the technology accessible to clinicians managing high-risk surgical and critically ill patients in operating rooms and intensive care units across Western Europe.

Marc Zemel, co-founder and CEO of Retia Medical, said Western Europe represents one of the most important critical care markets globally, and expanding access to precise, calibration-free hemodynamic monitoring has been a key priority for the company.

“Our expanded relationship with Medtronic makes that reach possible. We’ve built a strong clinical foundation in the US, and this extends the same capability, and the same commitment to actionable cardiovascular data, into Europe,” he added.

Hemodynamic instability, including circulatory shock and hypotension, is a major cause of complications among critically ill patients and can worsen rapidly if not detected early. Continuous hemodynamic monitoring allows clinicians to intervene sooner, helping maintain oxygen delivery and protect organ function. Studies have shown that proactive hemodynamic management can reduce ICU stays by one to two days per patient.

The Argos Cardiac Output Monitor is powered by Retia Medical’s patented Multi-Beat Analysis (MBA) algorithm, originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Michigan State University.

Unlike conventional monitors that assess a single heartbeat at a time, the MBA technology evaluates multiple consecutive heartbeats to directly model vascular resistance. This enables accurate monitoring across ten hemodynamic parameters, even during challenging conditions such as arrhythmias, low cardiac output, and changes in vascular tone.

The system connects to the patient’s existing arterial line through a reusable cable, requires no calibration, and can be set up in under a minute. It also eliminates the need for disposable accessories and features a user-friendly multi-touch interface that clinicians can learn in under five minutes.

Marc De Martini, vice president of Acute Care & Monitoring for Western Europe at Medtronic, said accurate hemodynamic monitoring complements the company’s existing acute care technologies, including INVOS cerebral oximetry, in helping clinicians personalize care for critically ill and high-risk surgical patients.

“The Argos Cardiac Output Monitor expands our portfolio, providing meaningful cardiovascular insights across acute care settings, supporting clinicians as they assess patient status and make timely care decisions. This reflects our broader vision to enable safer care, support clinical confidence, and contribute to better patient outcomes,” he added.

The Multi-Beat Analysis technology also powers Argos Infinity, an FDA 510(k)-cleared software-as-a-medical-device platform that delivers continuous cardiac output and fluid responsiveness monitoring through existing bedside and tele-ICU systems.
