DoP Invites Applications Under Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry

Applications are invited under two key sub-schemes to promote domestic manufacturing and innovation in the medical devices sector.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, has invited applications from eligible entities under the Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI) aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, reducing import dependence, encouraging innovation, and deepening value chains across India’s medical devices sector.

Applications are being sought under two sub-schemes: Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence and Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme.

Under the Marginal Investment Scheme, selected applicants will be eligible for a one-time capital subsidy of up to Rs 10 crore on a reimbursement basis to support the manufacturing of key components, raw materials, finished medical devices, and accessories that help reduce reliance on imports.

Meanwhile, the department will provide financial assistance of up to Rs 5 crore on a reimbursement basis under the Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme for conducting clinical investigations, clinical performance evaluations, post-market follow-up studies, and animal studies.

Applications must be submitted through the SMDI online portal by July 23, 2026.

Further details on eligibility criteria, application procedures, and scheme guidelines are available on the Department of Pharmaceuticals website.

Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry

Formulated in 2024 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the scheme is designed to accelerate the growth and competitiveness of India’s medical devices sector through five key components:

  • Common Facilities for Medical Device Clusters
  • Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence
  • Capacity Building and Skill Development in the Medical Device Sector
  • Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme
  • Medical Device Promotion Scheme.

With a total outlay of Rs 500 crore, the scheme will be implemented over a three-year period from FY 2024–25 to FY 2026–27.

Over the implementation period, the SMDI is expected to provide a significant boost to the medical devices industry by addressing critical gaps across manufacturing, innovation, and skills development. The scheme aims to create a multiplier effect by expanding domestic manufacturing capacity, reducing dependence on imports, promoting quality, safety and efficacy standards, strengthening human resource capabilities, and enhancing the depth of medical device value chains across the country.
