The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has invited public comments on a proposal concerning the use of brand name extensions by pharmaceutical companies.
In a notice issued on Monday, CDSCO said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has received representations regarding the use of brand name extensions by pharmaceutical firms.
The issue was discussed during the 67th meeting of the Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC) held on November 17, 2025. During the meeting, the DCC was informed of a representation alleging that a pharmaceutical company was marketing multiple drug formulations under the same established brand name but with different extensions.
The representation highlighted concerns that using the same brand name for drugs containing different active pharmaceutical ingredients could mislead consumers and create confusion regarding their therapeutic use.
After detailed deliberations, the DCC recommended conducting a stakeholder consultation to examine the issue from various aspects.
Accordingly, CDSCO has uploaded the DCC’s recommendations on its website and is inviting comments from all stakeholders before taking further action on the matter.
Interested parties may submit their comments by July 17, 2026, via email at enforcecell.div@cdsco.nic.in.
