Japan-based medtech company Olympus has announced the commercial launch of its POWERSEAL Open Extended Jaw Sealer/Divider (PSOEJ) in the US and Canada. The device is indicated for use in open surgical procedures across several specialities, including colorectal, gynaecological, thoracic, urological and vascular surgery.
The PSOEJ is designed to be operated with one hand by most surgeons, freeing up the other hand for other critical tasks during surgery. Its design enables grasping and coagulation at the tip, while ergonomic features are intended to reduce hand fatigue and support ease of use.
“Olympus is excited to launch the latest addition to its POWERSEAL portfolio that delivers precision and efficiency during open procedures,” said Kanichi Matsumoto, corporate officer, Surgical Business Head, Olympus.
Key features of the device include:
- Vessel Sealing: Indicated for sealing vessels up to and including 7mm in diameter, including pulmonary vessels, tissue bundles and lymphatics. Its jaw coating is designed to minimise tissue sticking.
- Multifunctional Design: A curved, tapered jaw tip supports effective dissection while providing access to and visualisation of target tissue in confined spaces.
- Ergonomic Comfort: A proximally located rotation wheel enables single-handed operation and smooth rotation. The device also requires less squeeze force to close the jaws and activate the cutting blade.
The POWERSEAL Open Extended Jaw Sealer/Divider joins Olympus’ POWERSEAL 5mm portfolio. The devices are powered by the ESG-410 Surgical Energy Platform, which supports monopolar, standard bipolar, advanced bipolar, ultrasonic and hybrid energy modes. The PSOEJ is also compatible with the ESG-400 platform.
Olympus noted that the PSOEJ device is intended for single use only and re-sterilisation is not advised because of potential risks such as cross-contamination and excessive wear and degradation. Further, it said PSOEJ has not been demonstrated to be effective for tubal sterilisation or tubal coagulation for sterilisation procedures.
