Glenmark has inaugurated a distribution centre in Allentown, Pennsylvania, marking a significant expansion of its US operations and pharmaceutical supply-chain infrastructure.
Located on a 6.5-acre campus, the approximately 160,000-square-foot facility is Glenmark’s largest distribution centre in North America and its sole distribution hub in the United States.
The centre employs 45 people across operations, quality and administration, supporting the shipment of prescription and over-the-counter medicines to 321 locations across 43 states.
The inauguration was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tours attended by Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk, Pennsylvania State Senator Jarrett Coleman, Pennsylvania State Representative Ana Tiburcio, and representatives from regional economic development, business and workforce organisations, Lehigh County and Upper Macungie Township.
Marc Kikuchi, president and business head, North America, Glenmark, said, “Our growing US platform spans innovation, manufacturing and distribution, and the Allentown distribution centre is an important part of that commitment.”
“We chose the Lehigh Valley for its exceptional workforce, strong community, and proximity to our customers and US headquarters. We are proud to operate a central distribution hub that helps keep Glenmark’s medicines moving to patients nationwide from right here in the Lehigh Valley,” he added.
According to the company, the facility operates in compliance with applicable US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requirements. Its capabilities include controlled-room-temperature storage, refrigerated cold-chain storage, and DEA-compliant cage and vault storage. Since beginning operations, the centre has shipped more than 61 million units across the United States.
The Allentown distribution centre is the latest in a series of investments by Glenmark, reflecting its continued commitment to the US market and its focus on strengthening the American pharmaceutical supply chain.
Glenmark employs nearly 400 people across the United States and has invested close to USD1 billion in its US research and manufacturing capabilities, including nearly USD 400 million in its FDA-approved manufacturing facility in Monroe, North Carolina. The company has a portfolio of 229 FDA-authorised products that support approximately 90 million US prescriptions annually.
Glenmark said that safety and sustainability are integral to the facility’s daily operations. Employees follow established procedures for emergency response, evacuation, shelter-in-place and medical emergencies. The site also incorporates energy-efficiency measures, waste reduction, recycling, smarter packaging and optimised delivery routes.
The Allentown distribution centre joins Glenmark’s US headquarters in Elmwood Park, New Jersey; its manufacturing facility in Monroe, North Carolina; and Ichnos Glenmark Innovation (IGI), its wholly owned biotechnology subsidiary in New York. Together, these operations form an integrated US platform spanning corporate operations, manufacturing, innovation and distribution.
